Oru explores how a light can transform from a flat object into a functional lamp. Inspired by origami and portability of 3d structures, we set out to create a light that remains unobtrusive until needed.

iteration + play = *discovery*

We use paper as a means to play with 3D form, transformation, and manipulation of light.

resembles a table lamp.

After iterating through rounds of paper prototypes, we finally found a fold that could create a 90 degree structure and stability at the base. This allows us to have a form that feels familiar to a table lamp but with uniquely inspired form details: a functional foundation for our further refinement.

The challenge became recreating a paper behavior into a durable object. By creating cardboard prototypes using rigid triangular shapes and tape hinges, we refined proportions, stability, and the functionality.

This is far from the first origami-inspired transforming structure on market, and because of this, we could draw material and structural inspiration from phone cases, installations and fashion, but also learn where we might be able to push boundaries of the current category.

NYLON WAS A DEAD END, WE HAD TO PIVOT.

Nylon fabric initially seemed like the answer, providing smooth articulation and unexpectedly softening the light around the acrylic. However, every adhesive solution involved compromised the finish quality because of inconsistent application.

When pedaling back from, we found a bi-directional filament tape that could replace the masking tape in our prototypes and be a durable connection material. This led us to our final exploration: what if the tape could be applied as one piece over the entire surface?

proof of concept…

To create a proof of concept, I pieced together strips of 15mm tape to create that we then transferred onto the acrylic. We then purchased a 150mm roll for the final product, wide enough to cover all the parts. Now the hinges didn't draw attention to themselves, and the overall look had a seamless finish.
